The new truck recognizes the generous support of Rotary Clubs of Amherst, Bellvue, Elyria, Elyria Sunrise, Huron, Interact, Lorain, Milan, North Coast, Norwalk, Oberlin, Sandusky, Vermilion, Willard and the Rotary E-Club. This was an opportunity to provide more sustainable support to the communities these Rotary Clubs serve. When Juliana Chase-Morefield, Executive Director, explained the need for a refrigerated truck which would allow delivery of fresh produce throughout the four counties, Rotary Clubs stepped up to help. The overall (all ages) food insecurity rate in Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio was 13.5 in 2018. Second Harvest serves the counties of Crawford, Erie, Huron and Lorain. ![]() Working together with a vast network to acquire, gather and distribute nutritious. In addition to the specific ways we are helping day-to-day, we have been working to help address the root causes of food insecurity and how we can help people avoid needing the emergency food assistance we provide by increasing SNAP outreach, connecting people to other community organizations, and creating strategic initiatives outside of food distribution.The Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, has received a refrigerated truck purchased in part through a $36,000 donation by 16 area Rotary clubs and Rotary International Foundation. Second Harvest is the regional nonprofit committed to fighting hunger. Second Harvest has added more employees and expanded our volunteer team to serve the additional community members. This additional support will help food banks statewide and Second Harvest locally to bridge the gap in times of need. ![]() Second Harvest has started advocating for additional support from the state legislature. To meet this demand, Second Harvest is purchasing more food at higher costs rather than relying on donated food, which usually sustains the organization. Second Harvest is seeing over 40% more children, seniors, and families seeking help at food pantries than pre-pandemic. The combination of inflation and the end of pandemic relief programs has increased the need for emergency food assistance. The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year. Finally, we work closely with our local and federal legislators around advocating for federal funding for food through USDA, extension of the National Guard to support food bank operations and at the state level to support state-funded food programs. Throughout the pandemic, we expanded our efforts across multiple social media platforms and traditional media vehicles to raise awareness around the mission and also to ensure the public was aware of mobile food pantry distributions across the region. We convened a group of community leaders, government officials and citizens to discuss opportunities to expand access and address the needs of low-income residents.
